When can my baby start solid food?
You can introduce solids anytime between 4 and 6 months if your baby is ready. Until then, breast milk or formula provides all the calories and nourishment your baby needs and can handle. Your baby will provide clear signs when they are ready for solids. These include:
- Steady head control.
- Sitting well when supported. Even if they are not quite ready for a high chair, your baby needs to be able to sit upright to swallow well.
- Effective chewing. Your baby should be able to move food to the back of his mouth and swallow.
- Significant weight gain. Most babies are ready to eat solids when they’ve doubled their birth weight and are at least 4 months old.
- Growing appetite. He seems hungry- even with eight to ten feedings of breast milk or formula a day.
- Curiosity about what you are eating. Your baby is eyeing your bowl of rice or piece of fruit.
Ensure that you start slowly and follow your baby’s cues. Try starting with pureed vegetables, fruits and baby cereals and ensure you allow 3 days in between starting a new fruit or vegetable to ensure your baby has no allergic reactions.
