Ten Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming A Mother
Prepare for the unexpected with advice from Lily Kandalaft, founder and CEO of Malaak Mama & Baby Care
Becoming a mother is one of the most incredible experiences a woman can have. It’s a whirlwind of emotions, sleep deprivation, and inexplicable love that leaves you wondering how you ever existed without your child. But let’s be honest, there are a few things we wish we had known before diving headfirst into this adventure. So, mamas-to-be, here are a few things we personally wish we knew in advance.
1. The First Three Months Are Hard… So Make Sure Your ‘Village’ Is Ready For Baby’s Arrival
Navigating the initial few months of motherhood can be incredibly challenging, so make sure you reach out for help. Family and friends or professional childcare can provide an invaluable support during this time – whether it’s supporting with the baby while you shower or just a listening ear, their support can make a world of a difference. Equally important is prioritizing self-care. Remember, a well-cared-for mother nurtures a happier and healthier environment for her and her little one.
2. It Is Ok If Everything Is A Mess For A Little While
From unwashed dishes to piles of laundry, embracing the beautiful chaos of parenthood allows you to focus on nurturing your little one and prioritizing your own well-being. So, grant yourself permission to let go of perfection and instead revel in the joy that comes with this remarkable journey.
3. Accept That Your Body Will Change
Stretch marks, saggy bits, and a newfound appreciation for elastic waistbands become the norm. Remember, these are a testament to the incredible journey you have embarked upon
4. No More Privacy
Just when you thought locking the bathroom door would give you a moment of peace, your little one magically develops X-ray vision and knows exactly when you’re trying to relax. Say hello to your little ninja, who will interrupt every private moment you attempt to have – with love, of course.
5. Welcome To Mummy Olympics
Where your multitasking skills are put to the ultimate test. You’ll be an expert at cooking dinner, answering emails, and negotiating peace between siblings, all while nursing a baby and trying not to step on Lego. It’s a talent that deserves recognition.
6. Embrace The Art Of Negotiation
Move over world leaders, because mamas have perfected the art of negotiation. From bedtime battles to vegetable consumption, negotiation skills become your secret weapon. Want your toddler to eat his broccoli? Just promise him a trip to the playground. Don’t be surprised when he counters with ice cream negotiations though.
7. Your Child And Your Parenting Journey Are Unique
There is no right answer and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Amidst the multitude of opinions from others, conduct your own research, spend time in understanding your own child and then formulate your own opinion on how you want your parenting journey to go.
8. Mum Guilt Is A Real Thing
Whether you’re staying at home or pursuing your professional career, it will follow you like a shadow. It doesn’t matter if you’re baking cookies from scratch or letting your little ones enjoy a few too many screen-time hours – it’s an unavoidable part of the process. Embrace it, knowing that you’re doing your absolute best.
9. Implementing A Healthy Sleep Routine For Your Family Early On Will Be A Game Changer
Establishing schedules and routines early on helped ensure consistency and will help promote the overall well-being and happiness of both you and your children. Make sure you leave room for flexibility though! Embracing the balance between structure and flexibility is key.
10. You’ll Develop Superpowers
No, seriously! The amount of strength you’ll gain as a mama is mind-boggling. You’ll effortlessly carry a car seat while juggling a diaper bag, groceries, and your toddler’s favourite toy. You’ll develop incredible hearing, capable of detecting the faintest crying from miles away. And you’ll possess unconditional love that makes you capable of moving mountains for your little ones.
While being a mother comes with its fair share of craziness, it’s also a journey filled with love and incredible joy. So, embrace the chaos, laugh at the unexpected, and remember that you’re doing an incredible job
