Why an Antenatal Class is Right for You

Some people say that nothing prepares you for the arrival of a new baby. But we believe a good antenatal class can make a big difference when it comes to helping you be the best parents you can be and embrace the exciting (if not a bit nerve-wracking!) times ahead. Everyone has questions and concerns, from what to expect during delivery to breastfeeding and caring for your little one in the first few weeks, and antenatal advice will help you deal with the practicalities of parenthood, as well as the physical and emotional impact. Our Lead Midwife Educator Cecile de Scally explains some of the biggest benefits for you and your family.

Confident & Calm

Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, every pregnancy is unique and there’ll always be things you’re worried about, but not sure who to ask. A lot of pregnancy and birth talk tends to be heavy on the medical terminology, which can be confusing, and antenatal classes are a great place to raise those cringe-worthy questions in a friendly and informal environment. Knowing what to expect is crucial when it comes to reducing anxiety and the more information you have, the more relaxed and confident you’ll feel – key ingredients for a happy, healthy pregnancy and birth.

Understanding Your Options

There are so many things to consider when planning for your new arrival and the choices can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re living away from your home country. Antenatal classes cover a whole load of topics, such as staying fit and healthy during pregnancy, expectations during the birth and options for pain relief, as well as postnatal care and well-being for both mama and baby. They also give you the time and space away from the doctor’s office to figure out what’s best for you.

Practical Know How

If the moment the line turned blue you wanted to find out everything there was to know about the months ahead then you’re not alone! Head to your local bookshop or search for pregnancy and parenting books online and you’ll see that there are literally thousands to choose from. Of course, doing your research is beneficial, but if you don’t know where to start, or you simply don’t have that much time to read, then an antenatal class offers the same expert insight face-to-face. Even if you do make it through heaps of books, you’ll probably still have questions, plus you’ll get more hands-on with some of the practical (i.e. messier…) elements like changing nappies and birthing techniques.

Daddy Comes Too

Antenatal classes aren’t just for Mums, Dads are actively encouraged to join in! The fact is, expanding your family will be one of the biggest things to happen in your relationship and attending the class together lets you share the experience from an early stage. If you’ve been not so subtly leaving the webpage open on childcare articles or he panics when the baby talk starts, a class will give you some dedicated time to connect and get on the same page. Chances are, he’s just as nervous as you and he’ll learn how to offer the right support, as well as what to expect after bringing the baby home.

Create New Connections

Many couples who attend antenatal classes come away with new friendships that last long after the baby has been born. Perhaps none of your social circle has started a family yet or maybe they have children of different ages. With an antenatal class you’re welcomed into a group of other expectant mamas going through the same kinds of changes and having a strong support network in place during the lows of night feeding, and the highs of those first few words, will help to reduce feelings of isolation and boost your mood.
